CONCRETE IN THE SUBURUBS THE UNTOLD STORIES OF TERRACE AVE Coming Soon. Look to this page for updates and details regarding the documentary.
-
When people hear of, or mention, Long Island, it is often referred to as a suburban utopia and the epicenter of good living in the metropolitan New York area. Long Island has been home to such high-profile celebrities such as Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Lopez to name a few. Tourists often boast stories of summer vacationing in the Hamptons, and shopping in Dix Hills. There are some stories that never get told. There are some places that never get talked about. Hempstead is one such place. Commonly referred to as “The Hub” of Long Island, Hempstead is a suburban village and is also home to the infamous “Terrace Ave”. A 3-block-long strip located on the Northeast corner of town that includes the 6-story housing projects at 100 Terrace Avenue, and a collection of other smaller housing projects located on Terrace Ave and Bedell St. As featured on ABC Prime Time, Terrace Ave was declared “One of the worst neighborhoods in America”.
-
For more than 3 decades, “Terrace Ave” has been the site of some of the most horrific incidents of gang violence, prostitution, and one of the largest open-air drug markets on Long Island. Once considered “a nice place to live”, many people will argue that the crack epidemic of the 80s can be attributed to the rapid downward spiral of the quality of life in the neighborhood. It was during this period that crime and the use and sale of drugs were at an all-time high, and violence became a way of life for many of its residents and visitors who came to “do their dirt”. Drug trafficking on Terrace Ave became so profitable, that it made all previous law enforcement strategies obsolete, and it became a major source of illegal income for many families since 1980.
-
Terrace Ave is now a completely different place since January 2008. Not only are drugs and crime at an all-time low (over 80%), but its residents now live without fear. In a nutshell, Terrace Ave is a safer place to live. This documentary is a journey through pain, struggle, happiness, and success, and it serves as a testament to the fact that where one comes from does not have to dictate where one will end up. In fact, Terrace Ave has raised doctors, lawyers, nurses, police officers, correction officers, board of trustees members, and a slew of other professionals in spite of its stigma. There are great things happening on Terrace Ave everyday, but these stories hardly ever get told. Every city has its own Terrace Ave. The issues discussed in this project are not Hempstead's alone. These are global issues that a global audience should be familiar with. This documentary will not only allow the residents to tell the real story it will also help fund a recreation center in Mirschel Park. I Am Terrace Ave and this is my story.
