Pin-up may also refer to drawings, paintings and other illustrations done in emulation of these photos. The term was first documented in English in 1941, however, its use can be traced back at least to the 1890s. Many "pin ups" were photographs of celebrities taken fri symbols. Betty Grable was one of the most popular early pin-ups. Her poster was ubiquitous in the lockers of U.S. soldiers during World War II. Other pin-ups were artwork, often depicting idealized versions of what some thought to represent a particularly attractive woman. An early example of the latter type was the Gibson girl (girl Gibson), drawn by Charles Dana Gibson. The genre also gave rise to many specialized artists such as Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, George Petty and Art Frahm.
