People liked Nirvana not because they were talented but because they pretty much invented Grunge and made it popular. Without Nirvana so many other bands would not have existed or been noticed at all. Nirvana got people into a different type of music and thought people to say goodbye to hair metal. Their music will always be the voice of a generation that where in their late teens/early 20's in the 1990's. period. So while considering the impact of the band you can say no other than the fact that they were a really great band.
