Throughout history it has fought wars of liberation against the persians, romans, turkish, bulgarians then nazi germany italy in world war 2 and a bitter civil war and today serves to protect and defend its citizens and must be seen as a defensive unit to keep peace stability in the balkans..it is a member of the NATO alliance..
