HISTORY:The cb service was Established to meet the need for short means of communication for personal or Business use only The service has existed in New Zealand since 1953, being one of the first of this type in the world. Originally only 1 frequency was available for cb with power limit of 0.5 watts. in 1963 the number of frequencies increased to 7, all in the 26 MHz frequency band. During 1978 the number of channels further increased to 14, 11 for general use and 3 for business. The power also increase to 2 watts. Proposals to extend cb service were released to the public in June 1987 and from the resulting submissions some changes were made. Final details of the new 40 channel service were announced by Dr Michael Cullen MP at the annual conference of the citizen band radio Association of New Zealand and came into effect on 1 July 1988.
