I think of 'single' in three different ways, which often overlap. You can be legally single, socially single, or personally single. a. You are legally single if you are not legally married. This is of tremendous consequence in the U.S., as a whole treasure trove of protections and privileges come with legal marriage. (That's one of the reasons why same-sex marriage is pursued with such intensity.) Also, some of the people in your life might think it matters whether you are legally married. b. You are socially single if you are not in a romantic relationship that other people regard as serious. This is a much more slippery matter than the legal definition.
